The following is an article from The New Papers. I find the views
of this African writer, rather frank, and most accurate.
frank, yes. accurate, not quite,
'How long should one remain in the country to form an
impression?' she asked.
depends on how perceptive one is and how deep one cares to
probe.
Hoping to visit local street bazaars, she said that her visit to
Ngee Ann City had 'left her uninspired'.
The young people were likened to Asian versions of Britney Spears
and David Beckham.
the late Edward Said would giggle in his grave... its blatant
orientalism... a skewed western imagination of an "unchanging,
eastern other" .
so... just because we live in this part of the world, we have to
act like it?
we need to have street markets along filthy streets, manned by loud
hawkers who wouldn't think twice about fleecing the blur ang moh
tourist?
we cannot have well-stocked, air conditioned shopping centres?
because its not "asian" and having it makes us lose our "asian
soul" ???

we have to wear cheongsams, kebayas and saris? nevermind the fact
that in THIS weather, a simple t-shirt or tank top would be much
more comfortable? or might the esteemed reporter prefer if we
walked around bare-bodied with a sarong around our waist?
She also recalled an incident where she asked a local for
directions in a shopping mall.
A 'well-groomed, power-dressed woman' declined to help her out.
if she was being so judgemental and annoying at that time, i
would've gladly pointed her to the wrong direction.
She mentioned a spiky-haired blonde man in a performance, saying
that we ought to stop behaving 'yellow on the outside and white on
the inside'.
did she cut the young lad open to check his colour on the
inside? i thought we were all RED inside.
She griped about the lack of 'Malay and Chinese house shops',
the 'colourful street markets' and even 'traditional music'.
she came with a faulty impression and she
blames us for correcting it.
all who would like to have chinese new year and hari raya music
blasting along orchard road 24/7 raise your hands

However, she said she was impressed with Katong Antique House
and our variety of food.
probably the only thing "exotic" enough for her.
its not the first time i've heard this sort of nonsense...
i know crazy ang mohs who
refuse to eat local chinese food cos its "not exotic enough" ...
they prefer to eat malay and indian food... spicier, more
colourful, more exotic, more consistent with their image of this
exotic eastern land they came to work in.
its nonsense... we should be more secure of ourselves... voicing
out loudly over the trivial ignorance of a blur ang moh makes us
look defensive.
